Loving Comic Book Graphics
I'm a bit obsessed with comic book graphics right now. It has probably something more to do with nostalgia - oh yes, and the fact I love visuals.
When I was a kid, I had some mates who would get a comic every week - so lucky they were. If I was friends with them at the time, I could sit behind and peer over their shoulders as they read - you weren't allowed to touch the pages.
What precious things they were! I still remember the anticipation and the basking feeling. I must've started my own way of speed reading at that point - you shouldn't disturb the owner's reading experience or you might not be able to see next week's issue!
Once I asked if she could turn back the page and was met with an expression of horror so I didn't do it again.
I get to be 50 something - before the re-discovery and wonderment of comic books surfaces again.
I have digital copies - but we adapt and I feel the same as I did way back then.
I love the colours, the illustration styles and even the overprinting and other 'mistakes' like smudges or places where you can't quite read the text or see part of a picture.
The stories are compact - you read by intuition - gauging comprehension by the body language, colour, mood of the graphics and the lettering styles.
It is interesting how society evolves - a lot of stuff might be seen as politically incorrect now - but that's just another historical snapshot - it is interesting to see what issues, trends or fads were about when they were made.
A lot of subject matter, topics and themes are just the same as today when you get down to the nuts and bolts of it - just different clothing and language.
So, I just want to read all day long and soak up the experience. Oh what fun!
